Coraline

High angle- makes the character 'Other mother Wybie' look small, weak and vulnerable

P.O.V- 'Other Mother - dominant and powerful

Medium shot- gives up some idea of background but not tall.

The audience feels- Powerful we are looking down on Wybie through Other Mothers P.O.V
sad/ innocent for Wybie- he looks small and sad, Innocent, first characters in another world to suggest something is not right.

Directors- Purpose make us feel sorry for Wybie. Makes audience think that maybe the other Mother isn't nice - foreshadowing.

In the other shot with the other Wybie and the Other Mother, High angle shots are used effectively to show the theme 'looks can be deceiving' This can be demonstrated through a high angle shot from the Other Mother, She is looking down the front porch steps at a scared Other Wybie.
This makes the audience feeling Sorry for Wybie and make the Other Mother seem powerful.

The purpose of this scene was to make the audience think that maybe the other Mother isn't so nice after all. Combined with the use of lighting, Wybie is in a warm light but surrounded by darkness,, their director has created an atmosphere of audion something is not right. This reminds the viewer of later scene where  Coraline us looking up at the Other mother horrors she throws her through a magical portal into a locked room. This shows that looks can be deceiving because The Other wasn't nice like Coraline first thought.

Dutch tilt- Tell something about to happen.

P.O.V- The doll, Leads to something bad.

The Audience- Make the Audience feel Interested of what's going to happen.

Directors- Purpose is to make the audience feel interested in what's going to happen.

In the shot were Coraline was looking for the doll, It tells that Something wasn't right Something That leads to something bad. The purpose of this was to show how the problem will start and how it's going to happen. This makes the audience feel interested and wants to know what's going to happen, This makes The audience see The doll was a spy for The other mother to see what Coraline wants and doesn't want.

Workshop 1 Unpacking themes and Ideas

Theme/Idea- Something that links throughout the story.

Looks can be deceiving
- things aren't always they seems

Example 1=  The Beldam/ The other Mother
-She starts off as good/kind but is revealed to be an evil soul devouring metal demon.

-shows theme because the other mother changes gradually over time so that coraline and audience don't notice.

Important to the story because it help the audience understand Coralines choices when she realises that having everything perfect won't make her happy.

Example 2= Other world vs The Real World
-The other world is a perfect web/trap to catch Coraline, where as the real world is boring but safe.
Shows theme because even though the other world seems better in everyway. The real world is actually better/safer because it isn't a trap.
Important to help audience understand why Coraline goes back to the Real world.

Statement- In Coraline,Themes and Idea are used effectively
Evidence- For instance,The Theme looks can be deceiving is shown through the character of the 'other Mother'.
Explainations ( audience)- The 'Other Mother' Starts kind' but id revealed to be a soul devouring demon. This makes the audience feel that we shouldn't trust things or people that seems perfect at first glance.
Explaination( director)- This was done to make the audience feel weary or develop a sense of caution towards new situations.
Explaination (compare)Coinciding with this is the use of colour to show the 'Other Mother' is becoming more evil. At the start she is sorrounded  by warm colours that make us safe, but by the end it is dark with  neon green  which her seems dangerous.

Your link - This theme is also shown Through the changes in the Other Mother as it is Revealed to be as spider to catch Coraline.
